A New Way for Dearborn Entrepreneurs to Simplify Their Tech and Stay Secure
By: Joshua Apodaca-Muehlenweg, Vice President, Comcast Business

Small businesses across Dearborn continue to innovate, grow, and expand their digital capabilities. But as technology becomes more essential, it also becomes more complex to manage. We invited Joshua Apodaca-Muehlenweg, Vice President of Comcast Business to share his perspective on the technology challenges local businesses are facing, and how simplification is emerging as a practical strategy for staying connected, secure, and focused on growth. — Kelli Vanden Bosch, President, Dearborn Area Chamber of Commerce

Small businesses are at the center of Dearborn’s economic strength. From Main Street retailers to budding entrepreneurs, they create jobs, serve local communities, and drive innovation. Increasingly, though, they’re also being asked to manage a level of technological complexity that would have been unthinkable just a few years ago.

What used to be a straightforward setup – internet access, a phone line, and basic systems – has evolved into a mix of connectivity, cybersecurity, mobile solutions, and digital tools. For many business owners, especially those without dedicated IT staff, keeping all of that running smoothly can be time-consuming and costly.

At the same time, expectations have changed. Customers expect fast, reliable digital experiences, and cyber threats are no longer limited to large enterprises. Small businesses are just as likely to be targeted, often without the resources to respond quickly.

In conversations with business owners across Dearborn, a consistent priority has emerged: simplify. Many are looking to reduce the number of vendors they manage, bring essential services together, and move to more predictable monthly costs. The goal is to spend less time troubleshooting technology and more time focusing on employees, customers, and growth.

That shift is driving new approaches across the industry. At Comcast Business, for example, we introduced Total Solutions Advantage to bring connectivity and built-in cybersecurity together in a streamlined offer. The intent is to make technology easier to manage while helping protect businesses from cyber threats.

For members of the Dearborn Area Chamber of Commerce, this kind of simplification can have a meaningful impact. Whether it’s a boutique retailer navigating peak season, a restaurant managing online orders, or a contractor working across multiple job sites, dependable and secure technology is now a fundamental part of daily operations.

In my role, I see firsthand how small businesses contribute to the vitality of this region. Supporting them with tools that are easier to manage and more secure by design helps strengthen not just individual businesses, but the broader local economy.
