Supporting the Michigan Farmers Market Association’s mission to enhance downtown business districts, the 2015 Dearborn Farmers and Artisans Market presented by Oakwood Healthcare will begin on Friday, May 8th, 2015 with a kick-off celebration of spring. The Market will again be held in the parking lot behind the historic Bryant Public Library, located at Michigan Avenue and Mason in Dearborn.
The Dearborn Area Chamber will host a special ribbon cutting at 9 am with Dearborn Mayor John B. O’Reilly and U.S. Congresswoman Debbie Dingell, in which the public is welcome and encouraged to attend. A special pottery demonstration from Pewabic Pottery and cooking demonstration by Dorsey Schools will be featured following the ribbon cutting ceremony. The first 500 patrons at the Market will receive a free reusable shopping bag, compliments of PostNet Allen Park. English Gardens is sponsoring the Grand Opening Flower Day and will be at the market with various flowers, shrubs, and perennials. The market opens on Mother’s Day weekend—just in time to get some fresh flowers for your loved ones!
“We are pleased to be the host of one of the area’s unique community gatherings,” commented Jackie Lovejoy, President of the Dearborn Area Chamber of Commerce. “The Market has grown tremendously and the vendors, music and atmosphere are great! We encourage all of our area residents to come out and experience the delights and offerings of our Farmers and Artisans Market.”
In addition to last year’s Michigan farmers, artisans, and vendors, the farmers market will feature a number of new vendors who will provide a wide variety of quality offerings. The market has hours of 9:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m., and runs every Friday through September 25th. Please note that the market will be closed on July 3rd in observance of Independence Day.
“We have a wide variety of vendors including fresh flowers and produce, artisan baked goods, cheeses and meats, soaps, woodworking, honey, and much more,” commented Christina Werner, Dearborn Farmers Market Manager.
A favorite addition to the market is the ‘Wine at the Market’ tent, sponsored by Center Street Wealth Strategies, where patrons can sample offerings from local Michigan wineries and buy their products. While shopping at the market, patrons can enjoy special features like cooking demonstrations, live entertainment, food trucks, gardening workshops and fitness sessions such as yoga and Zumba.
A new program at the market this year is the ‘Power of Produce Kids Club,’ sponsored by the Glass Academy. This program will allow children ages 5-12 to receive $2 in tokens every week at the market to spend on fresh fruits and vegetables. The program offers kids the opportunity to make healthy food choices for themselves. Kids who shop and interact with growers and farmers are able to fully participate in the market.
“The Market will also include gardening workshops, educational & fitness activities, as well as cooking demonstrations as a part of this program,” Christina added.
As in previous years, local grade school teachers will bring students to the market for class projects, to learn money management, and the importance of healthy foods.
“There is a significant number of children who do not have access to fresh fruits and vegetables or even three meals a day outside of the school season,” said Christina. “We are seeking to provide this access at the market to children as well as teach them how to become responsible for their own health.”
As a part of the healthy living initiative at the market, patrons have access to free resources such as healthy recipes of the week, nutritional information, and free blood pressure checks from Oakwood Healthcare. Additionally, the Dearborn Farmers and Artisans Market will continue to offer food assistance programs including SNAP/EBT, Double Up Food Bucks, Senior Market Fresh, and WIC Project Fresh (starting June 1st).
This season will feature five special event days including Flower Day (May 8), sponsored by English Gardens, Kid’s Day (June 5), sponsored by LaFontaine Automotive Group, Community Day (July 17), sponsored by Bangkok 96 Thai Restaurant, Senior Citizen’s Day (August 21), sponsored by Henry Ford Village, and Art at the Market (September 18), sponsored by Village Picture Framing & Art Gallery. Parking is free around the market area this season for patrons. Come to this weekly event in the heart of West Dearborn for a fun-filled day and support our local farms and businesses!
