The Dearborn Area Chamber of Commerce will host the prestigious Chamber Choice Awards & Expo on Friday, March 13, 2015 from 11 am – 2 pm, at the Henry, an Autograph Collection Hotel in Dearborn. This awards event, presented by Ford Land, combines effective networking and business appreciation, honoring over 90 businesses celebrating milestone anniversaries and an expo showcasing over 40 Dearborn area businesses.
This year the Chamber will honor DFCU Financial as Business of the Year. The
organization was formed when a group of Ford engineers pooled $5 each to found what was first called the Ford Engineering Employees Federal Credit Union. Since its modest beginning, The Credit Union has expanded significantly and in 2003 changed its name to DFCU Financial as it continued branch expansion beyond Dearborn, Michigan. A merger with MidWest Financial in 2010 enabled DFCU Financial to open branches in the Ann Arbor and Ypsilanti area. DFCU Financial plans to open three new branches in Ann Arbor, Plymouth and Macomb Township in 2015.
Outstanding financial performance has allowed DFCU Financial to give “cash back” to members since 2006. To date, the credit union has given members more than $181 million in dividends, which the credit union calls its own stimulus package for the community. Today, DFCU Financial is the largest credit union in Michigan and is among the best managed in the United States. It has more than $3.7 billion in assets, serves more than 200,000 members and has more than 500 employees contributing to its members’ success.
The Leadership Award will be presented to Dr. Stan Jensen, President of Henry Ford College. In May, 2013, Henry Ford Community College welcomed Dr. Jensen as its fifth president. During his short time in office, Dr. Jensen has led the institution through many challenges including drastically decreasing a significant financial deficit through spending freezes, contract renegotiations with staff unions and even taking a personal pay cut. Dr. Jensen has also led the College through a name change to Henry Ford College, which included an overhaul of the institution’s branding and image and the addition of four-year degrees. As a result of his tremendous leadership, Dr. Jensen recently reported that Henry Ford College is one of only a few higher education institutions in the State of Michigan to have a positive enrollment increase.
Moo Cluck Moo will receive the Small Business Award. Moo Cluck Moo, a local restaurant with locations in Dearborn Heights and Canton serving burgers, fries, and chicken sandwiches among other options, prides itse
lf on providing quality, great tasting food using ingredients that do not include hormones, preservatives and other chemicals.
